What is Pilates?

Core Chicago Pilates MachineThe Pilates Method was started by Joseph Pilates in the 1920’s as a method of rehabilitating prisoners of war. Utilizing the springs in the hospital beds, Joseph Pilates taught even bed ridden prisoners to exercise. It became clear that his method could provide practitioners with increased core strength, flexibility and increased body awareness. After the death of Joseph Pilates in 1967, his practice was kept alive by a small group of his devoted students. In the last few decades, exercise science has lent its research to the Pilates Method.

We utilize the Stott Pilates method at our studio. Stott Pilates is a more contemporary approach to the original exercises created by Joseph Pilates. Stott Pilates was founded by Moira and Lindsay Merrithew after extensive research led by physical therapists, sports medicine and fitness professionals. The result is the addition of modern exercise principles and spinal rehabilitation to the original Pilates Method exercises making Stott Pilates one of the safest and most effective methods available. It is used by everyone from rehab professionals to athletes and celebrities.
